British luxury brand A-COLD-WALL* continues its retail expansion in China with the opening of a flagship store in Shanghai. Located in the recently restored, centuries-old Zhangyuan neighbourhood, the store was designed in partnership with British architectural studio Hesselbrand and balances sharp contemporary design with the area’s rich cultural heritage.
The store’s design draws inspiration from historical examples of monumental architecture; the temple, the factory, and the gallery. The use of stone, glass, and brushed aluminium balances permanence with fluidity and industrial with natural elements, creating a positive tension which underpins the store’s design.
Key features include stone columns, translucent glass screens, and an infinite ceiling grid. The space is rhythmic, ephemeral, focussed; defining zones to foster interaction, and transforming the store into a venue for cultural expression, much like repurposed urban industrial spaces.
